Chrysoprase and Sterling Silver
Chrysoprase is a close relative of Carnelian, but is bright green, which comes from trace amounts of nickel. It is also much rarer. This is some of the finest in the world, and comes from an old closed mine near Maryborough, Queensland, Australia. Like Carnelian, Chrysoprase is a variety of chalcedony, a crypto-crystalline variety of quartz, and is translucent to semi-transparent with a waxy luster. Chrysoprase has a hardness of 7 and polishes very well. It has been found in Egyptian tombs dating to before 1500 bc. Chrysoprase is generally cut as a cabachon or used in inlay. It is especially handsome when set in sterling silver. |
